How to Use the Business Days Calculator
This free business days calculator helps you count working days between two dates, or find the date that falls a certain number of business days in the future or past. It skips weekends automatically and can optionally exclude US federal holidays for even more accurate deadline calculations.
Mode 1: Count Business Days Between Two Dates
Select Count Business Days from the tab bar. Enter a start date and an end date using the date pickers, or click Today to fill in the current date. Hit Calculate to see the results. The output shows four metrics: business days (weekdays only), total calendar days, weekend days skipped, and holidays skipped (when the toggle is enabled). A summary sentence below the stats gives you the full picture at a glance.
Mode 2: Add Business Days to a Date
Switch to the Add Business Days tab. Enter a start date and the number of business days to add. The calculator moves forward from the start date, counting only weekdays. If the holidays toggle is on, federal holidays are also skipped. The result shows the target date, the day of the week, and how many calendar days the span covers. This is ideal for calculating payment due dates, contract deadlines, or delivery estimates based on working days.
Mode 3: Subtract Business Days from a Date
The Subtract Business Days tab works the same way but goes backward in time. Enter a reference date and the number of business days to subtract. The tool walks backward through the calendar, skipping weekends and holidays, to find the earlier date. Use this when you need to calculate when a process should have started to meet a deadline.
US Federal Holidays
When the Exclude US federal holidays toggle is on, the calculator automatically identifies and skips ten federal holidays: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day. Holidays that fall on a weekend are shifted to the observed weekday (Friday for Saturday holidays, Monday for Sunday holidays). A reference table below the results shows which holidays fell in your date range and their observed dates.
Tips for Accurate Results
For legal or contractual deadlines, always confirm whether the governing rules count the start date. Some legal frameworks (like court filing deadlines) exclude the start date; others include it. The start date in this calculator is always included in the count. If your jurisdiction or contract uses different holiday schedules, leave the US holidays toggle off and adjust manually. For non-US countries, the weekend-only mode works globally since it counts Monday through Friday without any country-specific holidays.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this business days calculator free?
Yes, completely free. There is no signup, no account, and no usage limits. All calculations run in your browser with JavaScript — no data is sent to any server.
Is my data private?
Yes. Everything runs locally in your browser. No dates or personal data are transmitted to any server. The tool works offline once the page has loaded.
What counts as a business day?
A business day is any day from Monday through Friday. Saturdays and Sundays are always excluded. When the US holidays toggle is enabled, ten federal holidays are also excluded: New Year's Day, MLK Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
How does the tool handle holidays that fall on weekends?
US federal holidays that fall on a Saturday are observed on the preceding Friday, and holidays that fall on a Sunday are observed on the following Monday. The calculator uses these observed dates when the holidays toggle is enabled.
Can I add or subtract business days from a date?
Yes. Switch to the Add Business Days or Subtract Business Days tab, enter a start date and the number of business days, and the calculator shows the resulting date. Weekends and optionally holidays are skipped automatically.
Does the calculator work for non-US countries?
The weekend-only mode works worldwide — it counts Monday through Friday regardless of country. The US federal holidays option is specific to the United States. For other countries, leave the holidays toggle off and manually adjust for your local public holidays.
How accurate is the holiday calculation?
The calculator dynamically computes all ten US federal holidays for any year, including floating holidays like Memorial Day (last Monday in May) and Thanksgiving (fourth Thursday in November). Observed dates are correctly shifted when a holiday falls on a weekend.
