How to Use the Work-Life Balance Wheel

The work-life balance wheel (also known as the Wheel of Life) is one of the most widely used tools in personal coaching and self-development. It gives you a visual snapshot of how satisfied you are across the major areas of your life, helping you identify imbalances before they lead to stress, burnout, or dissatisfaction.

Step 1: Rate Each Life Area

Use the sliders on the left panel to rate your current satisfaction in each of the eight life areas on a scale of 1 to 10. A rating of 1 means you are deeply dissatisfied, while 10 means you feel completely fulfilled. Be honest with yourself and think about how you have felt over the past few weeks, not just today. The areas covered are Career, Finance, Health, Family, Social Life, Personal Growth, Fun and Recreation, and Physical Environment.

Step 2: Read the Radar Chart

As you adjust each slider, the radar chart updates in real time. A perfectly balanced life would appear as a large, even circle. Most people will see an irregular shape, which is completely normal. The shape of your wheel tells you at a glance which areas are strong and which are pulling your overall balance down. The closer the shape is to a circle, the more balanced your life is.

Step 3: Review Your Insights

Below the chart, you will find your overall balance score (the average of all 8 ratings), your strongest area, the area that needs the most attention, and the spread between your highest and lowest scores. The Insights section highlights areas of strength (rated 8 or above) and areas needing attention (below 5), along with personalized suggestions for improvement in each life area.

Step 4: Take Action

The most valuable part of the balance wheel is what you do with the results. Pick one or two low-scoring areas and commit to small, specific changes over the next month. For example, if Health scores low, you might commit to a 20-minute daily walk. If Social Life needs attention, schedule one coffee date per week. Small consistent actions compound into meaningful life improvements.

Step 5: Save and Track Progress

Use the download button to save your wheel as a PNG image, or print your results for offline reference. Reassess your work-life balance every 1-3 months to track how your scores change over time. Comparing your wheels side by side is a powerful way to see growth and stay motivated on your personal development journey.

What is the Wheel of Life?

The Wheel of Life is a coaching and self-assessment tool that divides your life into key areas and asks you to rate your satisfaction in each. It helps you visualize where you are thriving and where you may need to focus more attention for a balanced, fulfilling life.

What are the 8 life areas in the balance wheel?

The 8 areas are Career, Finance, Health, Family, Social Life, Personal Growth, Fun and Recreation, and Physical Environment. These categories cover the major dimensions of a well-rounded life and are commonly used in life coaching frameworks.
